If you and your dog are ready to start your herding education, or if you would like to start over, this section is for you. There are several options available, so choose the one that's right for you!

If you live in the greater Chicagoland area, check out the Private Lessons and Group Classes pages.  Sheep Herding Intros, Camps and Clinics are also a great way to get started and you'll find those listed on the Upcoming Events Calendar .  These education formats are held at the Dancing Hearts farm in Manhattan, IL.

If you are from more distant lands, you may wish to travel to Dancing Hearts for one of the weekend Sheep Herding events found in the Upcoming Events Calendar. You also have the option of choosing to learn via Online Herding Classes which can be found on the Herding Classes page, and in the Upcoming Events Calendar.

Full information on the methods and philosophy used at Dancing Hearts are on the Herding Program Overview page and the Connected Herding page.

The Connected Herding Program

This schedule of progression is followed for the Beginner levels: mattcooper.jpg

  • Level 1: Building the Foundation
  • Level 2: Basic Skill Building
  • Level 3: Practical Work and Expanding Skills

Private Lessons

Private lessons are customized to meet the needs of you and your dog. They are great if your schedule doesn't coincide with the group classes, or if you and your dog learn best with no distractions. Private lessons are available as individual 30 or 60 minute classes; or as 30 or 60 minute 4 week courses.

Group Classes

The group classes are wonderful for learning, since you are able to watch and learn from other teams working. The classes are limited to 4 dogs and handlers, so each team receives plenty of personal attention and work time.

Clinics and Camps

There are weekend Herding Clinics and Camps scheduled throughout the year at Dancing Hearts in Manhattan, IL and at other midwest locations.

Herding Clinics and Sheep Dog Training Camps are wonderful for everyone, and you are sure to find one or more that fits both your schedule and your focus of learning.

Distance Learning

These Online Classes are perfect for those who don't live in the local area, but would like to enjoy the benefits of learning Connected Herding thru weekly online lessons.  The lessons include photos, diagrams, voice-over instruction and movie segments detailing each lesson and homework assignments that you may practice at your farm or nearby location between lessons. The curiculuum follows the same progressive plan that is used for in-person lessons. The online classes include support from Kathy via email correspondence and movie footage that you record and upload for Kathy's review and suggestions.
